Description
Summary:Sites were chosen in order to have populations of different ages and to cover, as much as possible, the environmental spectrum in which the species occurs. In plots of 10m*10m (3 per sites), a general environmental survey was made (soil characteristics and temperature, slope angle and aspect) and vegetation cover was evaluated in 30 random quadrats (50 cm*50 cm). Willows in the plots were characterized (sex, numbers of catkins and area of each individual) and 30 catkins per site were collected. After all measurements were taken, 30 individuals per site were collected to perform dendrochronological analysis. In the laboratory, germination trials were made with the catkins collected and annual growth analyses were performed on wood microsections.
