Including historical and other name variants the total number of names per area is: ``` 16878 "Svalbard" 5020 "Dronning Maud Land" 1004 "Jan Mayen" 153 "Antarktis" 151 "Bouvetøya" 77 "Peter I Øy" 19 "Arktis" ``` Each named place may have multiple spellings. In particular the 400-year history of Svalbard has lead to many naming variants. [Spitsbergen](https://data.npolar.no/placename/7e32bd12-1010-5322-b042-1fbe519fc1f8) has the ighest number of historical variants: 55. Metadata is compliant with EU's [INSPIRE data specification on geographical names](https://inspire.ec.europa.eu/documents/Data_Specifications/INSPIRE_DataSpecification_GN_v3.1.pdf) (v3.1). + spelling + language (code) + nativeness (endonym/exonym) + nameStatus (standardised, official ,historical, other) + sourceOfName Points in WGS84 latitude/longitude pairs (geographic coordinates).
