Description
Summary:Genus Paractaea Guinot, 1969 Type species. Xantho rufopunctatus H. Milne Edwards, 1834 [Type locality: Mauritius Island] Remarks. Guinot (1969) and Serène (1984) recognized 10 forms in total within Paractaea rufopunctata (H. Milne Edwards, 1834). Most of the forms recognized by Guinot and Serène were later considered unavailable names by Ng et al. (2008) under the provisions of Article 10.2 of the ICZN (1999), with the exception of P. nodosa (Stimpson, 1860) considered a full species. The name rufopunctata africana introduced by Guinot (1969) became available only through Guinot (1976). Also of interest is that P. rufopunctata africana Guinot, 1976, has been granted full specific status by Mendoza et al. (2014), namely P. africana Guinot, 1976. Various authors were in error in applying (without stating their reasons) the name Paractaea rufopunctata (H. Milne Edwards, 1834), a species originally described from Mauritius, to the western Atlantic species P. nodosa (Stimpson, 1860), originally described from Tortugas, Florida (e.g. Felder et al. 2009; Thoma et al. 2014; Mantelatto et al. 2020).
