Description
Summary:Genus Epialtus H. Milne Edwards, 1834 Type species. Epialtus bituberculatus H. Milne Edwards, 1834 [Type locality: coasts of Chile]. Remarks. Epialtus is an American genus consisting of seven species to date: E. bituberculatus H. Milne Edwards, 1834 (WA), E. brasiliensis Dana, 1852a (WA); E. dilatatus A. Milne-Edwards, 1878 (WA), E. elongatus Rathbun, 1923 (EP), E. longirostris Stimpson, 1860 (WA), E. minimus Lockington, 1877 (EP), E. peruvianus Rathbun, 1923 (EP), and E. sulcirostris Stimpson 1860 (EP). Epialtus portoricensis Rathbun, 1923 (WA) is here placed under the synonymy of E. longirostris (see below). Epialtus bituberculatus has long been known from many localities along the western Atlantic coasts. However, its description was based on a male supposedly from Chile, from where it has never been recorded since.
