Description
Summary:Planktonic foraminifera is widely distributed across geographical zones in the ocean. Its body plan preserved the ontogeny of the organism, and its morphology commonly has a strong connection with the paleo-ocean conditions. However, the co-evolution relationship remains uncertain in many cases, as our understanding of the morphology is limited. With the technological innovation such as micro computed tomography in the recent years, the fidelity of the morphological analysis has reached a new level, with the advantages of accuracy and being more comprehensive. Here, we provide two datasets of X-ray micro-CT 3D images of fossil planktonic foraminifera Trilobatus sacculifer/Globigerinoidesella fistulosa and Pulleniatina spp. from the marine core ODP 1115B (the western Pacific). The datasets are concerning two biostratigraphic events: The LAD event of G. fistulosa, and the left-coiling event of Pulleniatina spp. With further studies, the morphological evolution of the planktonic foraminifera species during these events can be reconstructed in detail. This could also provide us knowledge on the use of the two events in biostratigraphy.
