DISTRIBUTION: Worldwide: arctic to tropical waters. STATUS: CITES - Appendix I; U.S. ESA - Endangered; IUCN - Endangered. SYNONYMS: brevicauda, gigas, indica, intermedia, major, sibbaldii, sibbaldius, sulfureus. COMMENTS: Reviewed by Yochem and Leatherwood (1985). Includes subspecies B. m. brevicauda Ichihara, 1966 (not Zemsky and Boronin, 1964, which is a nomen nudum (Rice, 1977:6). Published as part of James G. Mead & Robert L.
