Description
Summary:Autolytus varians Verrill, 1881 Autolytus ornatus Verrill, 1880: 170. Autolytus varians nom. n. Verrill, 1881: 320, pl.12, fig. 7; 1884: 662; Hartman 1944: 338, pl. 13, fig. 3, pl. 25, fig. 3. Material examined . USA : 2 slides marked as types; YPM 24219 (stock with developing stolons), Newport, 1880; YPM 24223 (male stolon), Woods hole, 1880. 3 additional slides; YPM 24218 (female stolon), unknown year; YPM 24224 (2 female stolons, and one atoke), Woods hole, 23 Jul 1881; YPM 24225 (2 female stolons), Salem, Essex bridge, 1879. Distribution . North West Atlantic. Remarks . Autolytus varians was first described as A. ornatus , but the name was changed since Stephanosyllis ornata Verrill, 1873, was found to be congeneric. The description was based on female stolons, with 3 chaetigers in region a, and a "possible" male was also briefly described. The types that are available do not fit the original description. YPM 24219 is a stock with developing stolons, YPM 24223 is a male stolon. As the types can not be safely determined, and as the described stolons can be of several possible species, A. varians is considered as nomen dubium .
