Description
Summary:Porichthys notatus Girard, 1854. Plainfin Midshipman . To 46 cm (18.1 in) SL (Williams et al. 2014). Smith Sound, southern British Columbia (Pietsch and Orr 2019) to southern Baja California (about 24°12’N, 111°21’W) (Cabrera Mancilla et al. 1988). Depth: intertidal to 464 m (1,522 ft) (min.: Eschmeyer and Herald 1983; max.: Bradburn et al. 2011). Records south of Baja California and into the Gulf of California are misidentifications (Allen and Smith 1988); P. notatus is replaced by Porichthys mimeticus in the Gulf of California (Walker and Rosenblatt 1988). Although reported from Sitka, south-eastern Alaska, no one has been able to confirm an Alaskan record; see discussion by Mecklenburg et al. (2002).
