Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to southern Kuril Islands (Savinykh 1998); Astoria, Oregon (Eschmeyer and Herald 1983) to southern Baja California (Parin in Fischer et al. 1995) and into Gulf of California (Robertson and Allen 2002); Chile (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). Oceanic (Eschmeyer and Herald 1983) and neritic (Watson in Moser 1996); depth: surface to 10 m (33 ft) (Robertson and Allen 2002). Cypselurus californicus (Cooper, 1863) is a junior synonym.
