Shell elongated, slender, small to large (5–15 mm), commonly presents brownish/yellowish spiral and/or axial bands close or at the suture; protoconch smooth, usually conical, whorls slightly convex; teleoconch smooth, with flat (more frequently) or slightly convex whorls; sutures almost indistinct; aperture elongated, slender, outer lip usually straight or slightly sinuous, distinct callus on the parietal wall and the columella; umbilicus absent (adapted from Bouchet & Warén 1986; Warén 1989).
