Description
Summary:FIGURE 5. Top. NRM 54834, Neotype Lampris guttatus, 100.5 cm SL, Bormes-les-Mimosas, France. Bottom. MOM POI- 0004791, Paraneotype Lampris guttatus, 97 cm SL, Northeast Atlantic, landed in Denmark. Note that specimen was frozen for several years before examination and color pattern is abnormal due to freezing process. Opahs are known to have a sexually dimorphic characteristic of an enlarged abdomen in males. MOM POI-0004791 was confirmed as female and we surmise that NRM 54834 is a male.
