Description
Summary:A detailed map of the western hemisphere showing cities, settlements, Native American land, rivers, lakes, mountains, the Great Lakes, and California as an island. Hand painted borders divide the regions of the Americas. A large land mass, entitled "Terra Esonis" extends from Russia nearly to California. The western edges of the Great Lakes are left undefined, and Button's Bay is left open to what was hoped to lead to the North West passage. A portion of Australia is shown, and a small inset map of New Zealand is set into the lower left corner of the elaborately illustrated title cartouche. An illustration of an Amazonian queen sits next to the cartouche, as a man kneels before her pouring out grain. They are surrounded by gold, fruits, a sugar cane field, a lizard, armadillo, and a bird. Of some interest, while the colony of Virginia is marked and bordered, Jamestown does not appear on this map. A city where Jamestown should appear is instead labeled as Powhatan.
