Description
Summary:This map shows the northern Pacific Ocean with North America and Asia, with cities and geographical features labeled, as well Russian, French and Spanish routes across the Pacific from Japan, China and Siberian Russia to northern Canada and California. The borders of the countries and regions are hand colored and a decorative title cartouche sits in the top center, flanked by an "Avertissement" and various scales. An illustration of Kamchatka native and a Louisiana native decorate the left and right corner respectively. The purported discoveries and exploration of the Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte in 1640 are given particular prominence. However, not only are these discoveries entirely inaccurate, there exists some evidence that Bartholomew de Fonte himself was a fictional creation of English periodical Memoirs for the Curious.
