| Summary: | Spanning the 49th parallel, the North Cascades ecosystem is managed by a number of different jurisdictions, highlighting the need for international cooperation. Protected areas, forests and private lands provide challenges in creating an integrated management approach. Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) are in danger of being extirpated from the North Cascades, with a population dwindling to fewer than 20 individuals. Grizzly bear augmentation is required to prevent to increase the population and genetic diversity. Parks and protected areas play an important role in the preservation and enhancement of Grizzly bears. Furthermore, communities surrounding the North Cascades need accurate information in regards to Grizzly augmentation to reduce the many negative public perceptions about bears in general. Without public, support a viable grizzly population in the North Cascades is unlikely.
