Summary:This presentation explores children’s stories gifted from elders of two Coast Salish communities, about endangered plants and animals in Salish Sea forest ecosystems. Translated from the elders with their permission, and drawn from field-based species observation, these illustrated stories of five keystone Salish Sea forest species may be able to educate more interdisciplinary and transboundary understandings of environmental respect. This inquiry focuses on the potential impact of the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)-based children’s stories both within the Salish Sea First Nations communities themselves, as well as in larger western science-based circles of Salish Sea management.
