We have had our first snow and just about everyone is predicting a hard winter for the mountains here. Not sure what the weather may hold, but this JTJ is full of information and research to keep you occupied on cold winter days. Remember that the December meeting of JCGS will be our annual cover dish supper. We will be installing our officers and presenting our annual awards. Read the enclosed information about the awards given by the Society and make sure you send in your votes. A really good idea for your Christmas shopping is a membership to the Society. If you have someone on your list that you think would enjoy reading JTJ and learning about our local families and history , consider giving them a membership to the Society. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2014 151 Descendants of Archer Blanton ED: Jim McGinnis a JCGS member, graciously submitted this article to the Society for us to use in JTJ. It will continue in further issues. 1. Archer Blanton was born about 1740 in Amelia County, Virginia. He died after 1810 in NC. Notes for Archer Blanton: Archer Blanton has scant information found in Virginia and North Carolina. We found information under the names Archer, Archibald, Arch, and Archee. We assume the findings to pertain to only one person and use Archer Blanton as his most likely name. yDNA testing during 2002 of a descendant of Jeremiah Blanton has proven that Jeremiah’s father Archer was a descendant of Abraham Womack. Abraham Womack and Ann ____ Blanton had two children, Thomas Womack and Archee Blanton, both born out of wedlock, (since Abraham and Ann ___ were already married to others.) During 2004 yDNA testing of descendants of Clairborne & William Blanton, brothers of Jeremiah Blanton prove they are indeed kin and all descend from Abraham Womack through his son Archer/Archee. On Dec. 28, 2012, a descendant of Archee through a daughter (dau name unknown) and probably his 2nd wife, matched DNA segments with me at Family Finder (Familytreedna) and my nephew Alan Murray. Her name is Becky Webb Hollingsworth aka R. Webb. Her 2012 email is bjh8118@charter.net . We think our DNA segment is on Chromosome 6, start location 95 end 109 (in millions) for 13.39 cMs & 2900 SNPs. Another match at 23andMe with a Womack descendant James Moore Jr. jmsiu65@aol.com ocured at start 103 end 112 common ancestors Wm Womack 1753-1820 m. Lucienda Womack. There is a 1895 memoir by Rev. Christenberry Lee in which he states that Jeremiah Blanton’s father was in fact Archee Blanton, and that Jeremiah’s wife Sarah Womack was the daughter of Archee’s brother, Thomas Womack. (This was in error, Sarah was the granddaughter of Thomas Womack.) Following is a gathering of facts from which the readers can draw their own conclusions: By 1724 Thomas Blanton marries Ann ___. This places Ann’s birth year c1710 or before. Her maiden name is not known. 6 Sep 1737 Spotsylvania Co Va Court “on the petition of Ann Blanton, it is ordered that the Church wardens of St. George Parish bind out John Blanton, Joshua Blanton and William Blanton, children of Thomas Blanton who hath neglected t educate & bring them up as he ought to do under such Covenants as the Law in such cases doth direct."”p. 515 Spotsylvania County Orders. “Lists of Tithables taken by order Court. June 1750” shows Abraham Womack & Joshua Blanton … 2 tithes, Amelia Co., VA. (This means that Joshua was probably bound out to Abraham c1737, and Abraham begins an affair with Joshua’s mother Ann ___ Blanton (Her husband Thomas Blanton had died or left her?) 17 May 1751 Amelia Co., VA court order: “Ordered church wardens of Nottoway Parish to bind out Richard Blanton, Jr., Thomas Blanton and Archer Blanton.” Later that same day, Grand Jury sworn, presentments: “For Abraham Wawmock and Ann Blanton for living in adultery…” Order Book #1-A 1746-1751. (We can estimate the birth years of these sons: Richard Jr. born after 1730, Thomas c1738 and Archee c1740.) Business meetings agendas no vital stats. Page 16 “Abraham Womack to keep Ann Blanton for a year.” (Keep means to support her so Ann and Abraham probably weren’t together anymore.) 1760-63 Prince Edward Co., VA Deed Bks 1-2 abstracts #975.5632P28pe. An Abraham Womack buying and selling land in St. Patrick’s parish, 1760-1763. Also some deeds for a Richard Womack. Later Abraham moved to Lincoln Co., NC where he dies in 1804. His will names only sons Abraham and Abner, and grandson James Womack. Following are findings concerning Archee/Archer/Archibald/Arch Blanton: 1740 Estimated birth year. Assumed born in Amelia Co., VA. 1751 Archer Blanton is bound out by Amelia Co., VA Church wardens of Nottoway Parish. 1780 June 21 Archer Blanton Land Patent 150 acres Guilford Co., NC, Claiborne Blanton chainman on survey. 1786 Jan 23 Archee Blanton was a chainman on a survey in Lincoln Co., NC. 1790 Census Morgan District, Lincoln Co., NC pg 112 Zech (sic) Arch Blanton 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females. (This may or may not have been our Arch.) The census taker’s writing was interpreted as Zech in various census indexes, but it could have also been interpreted as Arch. To my knowledge, no Zech Blanton existed Lincoln Co., NC is where Archee’s father Abraham died in 1804. 1795 May 12 Wilkes Co., NC Archer Blanton witnessed deeds Adams & Henderson. 1803 Jan Wilkes Co., NC Archer Blanton witnessed deeds Gray & Mitchell 1805 Wilkes Co., NC Archer Blanton witnessed deeds Myers & Hamby 1806 Wilkes Co., NC Archer Blanton witnessed deeds Adams & Crain 1810 Wilkes Co., NC Census pg 295: Archibald Blanton, 1 male over 45, 3 females 10-16, 1 female over 45. (If this is our Archee Blanton, it appears he has a 2nd wife & family.) Archer Blanton had the following children: 2. i. Clairborne Blanton was born between 1760-1763 in Virginia. He died before 18 Mar 1833 in Tennessee. He married Elizabeth about 1785. She was born between 1760-1770. 3. ii. Obediah Blanton was born in 1765 in Virginia. He died after 1850 in North Carolina. He married Betsy Green. She was born between 1770-1780/ She died before 1823. He married (2) Judy Wardin on 21 Dec 1823 in Rutherford Co., NC. She was born in 1778 in North Carolina. She died after 1850. 4. iii. Jeremiah Blanton was born on 7 Dec 1774 in Virginia. He died 24 Dec 1872 in Rutherford Co., NC. He married Sarah Womack, daughter of William Womack and Lucienda Womack on 22 Feb 1798 in Rutherford Co. NC. She was born on 10 Aug 1782 in NC. She died on 29 Jan 1858 in Rutherford Co., NC. 5. iv. William Blanton was born in 1779 in North Carolina. He died after 1870 in North Carolina. He married Sarah Ketcherside. She was born in 1804. She died after 1870. Generation 2 2. Claiborne Blanton was born between 1760-1763 in Virginia. He died before 18 Mar 1833 in Tennessee. He married Elizabeth about 1785. She was born between 1760-1770. Notes for Claiborne Blanton: Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2014 153 Claiborne was probably born in Virginia. Claiborne was brother to Jeremiah, Obediah and William Blanton who all lived near each other in Rutherford Co., NC during he late 1790’s –early 1800’s. Proof of this is from the “little book: by Alfred Blanton c1900. On May 16, 1805 Clayborn (sic) Blanton sold land to his brother William Blanton and the deed was witnessed by Obediah and Jeremiah Blanton, Rutherford Co., NC. This deed alone indicated close kinship. Louise Banton McDonald, an eminent Blanton researcher in the 1950’s-1980’s, wrote that there were more than 25 different spellings of the name Clairborne on record. June 21, 1780, Archer Blanton filed for a land patent in Guilford Co., NC, and a survey was made. Claiborne Blanton’s name was shown on the plat page, as a member of the survey party. The land patent was for 150 acres on both sides of upper Hogans Creek. File No. 937, Grant No. 936, issued Nov 8 1784; Entry No. 2107, entered June 21, 1780, filed in Book 56 page 185. Claiborne’s name appeared on the 1790 census of Rutherford Co., NC “Claybon Blanton” living in the Morgan District census page 140, family consisted of one male over 16, two females. He had land grants on November 8, 1805 and July 12, 1809 on the waters of Sandy Run in Rutherford Co., NC. Clayborn (sic) Blanton had a land grant in Rutherford Co., NC in 1807, Bk 22 pg 23 #646. His name appeared in the Rutherford Co., NC 1810 census pg. 88 (pg. 160) “Clayburn Blanton”, age 26-45, wife 26-45; 3 sons under 10; 2 sons 10-16; 1 son 18-26; three daughters 16-26. 1820 census, pg. 285 Rutherford Co., NC: 3 sons 10-16; 1 son 16-18; 1 son 18-26; Clabourn age 45 & over; 3 daughters under 10; wife age 45 & over. Claiborne & family moved to Monroe Co., Tennessee before 1830 since he appeared in the 1830 census there. Claiborn Blanton was age 60-70, one female 60-70. Therefore Claiborne and his wife were born between 1765-1770. March 15, 1833 Deed Nk 106, Lewis Blanton to Burill Blanton “lands on waters of Tellico River, Hiwassee Dist. Etc. 60 acres, agreeable to the will of Claborn Blanton …” The Monroe Co., TN courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1835, many records were lost. Deed Nk 106 indicates Claiborne Blanton died prior to Mar 15, 1833. – Info from Louise Blanton McDonald c1980’s. Claiborne Blanton had sons; Josiah, William, Lewis, John, Jefferson, Burrell and daughters; Susanna, Polly, Anna, Sally, Elizabeth, and Judy All his sons went to Texas except William who was born c1799. William Blanton’s sons were: Alfred B., John, Gilford, and James. All these went west (Arkansas) except Alfred (born 1820). – Info from a letter of Joseph Beam, descendant Claiborne, who said his information was taken from the “little book” and a few dates from Bibles. No date was on the letter, but we think it was about 1936 to 1940. An envelope copied with pages from the little book show a 1940 postmark. Back in 1854-55 Aggie Blanton Johnson filed for a pension for her father. William Blanton’s Rev. Wa service, since he had not filed. This is the William Blanton “of Lee Co, VA” who married Hannah Hobbs. Within the petition, she listed her brothers and sisters. One brother was “Clarborn”, another Vincent. At the time Aggie filed, she lived in Washington Co., VA. She Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2014 154 stated Clarborn and all other siblings were dead. A lot of researchers have assumed the Claborn of this family was the same Claiborne Blanton who lived in Rutherford Co., NC. However, in the 1820 census of Warren Co., TN, “Clabourn” Blanton and Vincent Blanton are listed on pg. 264. Since we have our Claiborne appearing in the 1820 census of Rutherford Co. NC and this Clabourn Blanton appearing in the 1820 Warren Co., Tn census, one can see that they were two different people. Sources of information: 1. Carolyn Lorenz is a descendant of Claibourne and sent her research info 6/1/2002. 2. 1820 Census Warren Co., Tn info from Blanton forum posting #2104 dated 1/16/2002 by Kent Blanton. 3. 1820 Census Rutherford Co., NC info from Caroline Getting 5/31/02 and wrm. 4. Aggie Blanton Johnson info from a copy of her application received by wrm in 1986 from Jean Tanner 5. Archer Blanton land patent was found by Bob Stafford in Feb 2004, copy to wrm via Ruth Walsh. Claiborne Blanton and Elizabeth had the following children: i. Sally Blanton was born about 1790. ii. Mary Polly Blanton was born about 1792. iii. Annie Blanton was born about 1794. iv. Josiah Blanton was born about 1796. He married Elizabeth Davis on 19 Feb 1815 in Rutherford Co., NC. Notes for Josiah Blanton: Josiah Blanton married Elizabeth Davis 19 Feb 1815 in Rutherford Co., NC. Jas Sheaves was bondsman and L. McBrayer was witness, record # 086 01 022, bond # 000132459 NC marriages OKC OK archives. From the Alfred B. Blanton Bible, note that Josiah went to Tennessee. 6. v. William Madison Blanton was born 1 Dec 1799 in NC. He died on 13 Jan 1882 in Mooresboro, Cleveland Co., NC. He married Sarah Melton. She was born on 13 Jul 1800 in NC. She died on 14 Feb 1868. He married (2) Priscilla Ellis on 16 Nov 1834 in NC. She was born in 1799 in NC. She died after 1850. 7. vi. Lewis Blanton was born in 1808 in NC. He died after 1860. He married Hester. She was born in 1807 in NC. vii. John W. Blanton was born on 13 May 1806 in Shelby, Rutherford Co., NC. He died on 24 Jul 1874 in Cherokee Co., NC. viii. Jefferson H. Blanton was born in 1808 in NC. He died after 1860. 8. ix. Burwell Blanton was born on 20 Aug 1810 in Rutherford Co., NC. He died on 31 Dec 1896 in Sweetwater, Monroe Co., TN. He married Mary Caroline Tate. She was born in 1811 in VA. She died on 15 Jun 1863 in Monroe Co., TN. x. Susanna Blanton was born about 1812 in NC. xi. Elizabeth Blanton was born about 1813. xii. Judia Blanton was born about 1814. 3. Obediah Blanton was born in 1765 in Virginia. He died after 1850 in NC. He married Betsy Green. She was born between 1770-1780. She died before 1823. He married (2) Judy Wardin on 21 Dec 1823 in Rutherford Co., NC. She was born in 1778 in NC. She died after 1850. Notes for Obediah Blanton: “Obediah Blanton was born in Virginia and removed to North Carolina in his early manhood. In North Carolina he married Betsey Green, and reared a family of four children. Obediah was a Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2014 155 soldier in the War of 1812, and fought under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. He was a planter and a slave owner in North Carolina and lived to e 80 years of age.” Encyclopedia of the History of Missouri by Howard Conrad 1901 pgs. 292-293. Obediah Blanton filed three land grants in Rutherford Co., NC (1) on Nov 2, 1800 on the waters of Sandy Run Creek; (2) in 1802 Bk 15 pg 17, #556; (3) then on Jan 14, 1823 on the waters of Webb Creek. Obediah appeared in 1800 & 1810 census of Rutherford Co., NC. 1820 Census of Burke Co., NC lists Obediah Blanton, age over 45. 1830 Census Rutherford Co., NC shows Obediah living near Jeremiah. Obediah’s age is shown 50-60 and wife 50-60, making them born 1770-1780. In 1986 a researcher named Gordon Runion sent me information about a certain Obediah Blanton. “An Obediah Blanton age 72 and wife Judith 72 were listed in McDowell Co., NC 1850 census with James Webb family born in TN. McDowell Co. adjoins Rutherford Co., NC.” I followedhis lead up with a bit of investigating. I found the 1850 census, at page 310B family 812. Obadiah Blanton age 72 born NC (VA?) and Judith Blanton 72 NC, living with grandson James P. Webb and family. NC marriages show an Obediah Blanton married Judy Wardin 21 Dec 1823, Record 086 01 022, Bondsman: Muriel Melton, witness: R.K. Wilson. Bond #000132463. This Obediah is about 10 years to young to be “our” Obediah, and the wife’s name is not Betsey unless this was a second marriage? Betty Crabtree, Blanton researcher, thinks this is our Obediah and the age was recorded wrong in the census. She says one of Obediah’s & Betsey’s daughters married James Webb, and the James Webb in the census was a grandson, the Mary Webb is James’ mother and Judith was Obediah’s second wife. Obediah Blanton and Betsy Green had the following children: i. William Blanton was born in 1800. ii. John Blanton was born between 1800-1810. 9. iii. Gazzaway Blanton was born in 1809 in Burke Co., NC. He died in 1891 in Polk Co., TN. He married Mary Baker. She was born in 1810 in Burke Co., NC. She died in 1870. iv. Polly Blanton 10. v. Sarah Blanton She married James Webb on 23 May 1824 in Rutherford CO., NC. v. Artie Blanton 4. Jeremiah Blanton was born on 7 Dec1774 in Virginia. He died on 24 Dec 1872 in Rutherford Co., NC. He married Sarah Womack, daughter of William Womack and Lucienda Womack on 22 Feb 1798 in Rutherford Co., NC. She was born on 10 Aug 1782 in NC. She died on 29 Jan 1858 in Rutherford Co. NC. Notes for Jeremiah Blanton: Jeremiah Blanton was probably born in Virginia. This is based upon certain census information where he stated his birth state was Virginia. However, on the 1850 census record of Rutherford Co., NC, pg 309 2nd Broad River District, dwelling 1147 & family 1179, it shows his age 75 and his birth state was North Carolina, which is why we say he was “probably” born in Virginia. We’re not sure. However, the last two census he appeared in were the 1860 and 1870 census, living with his son Elijah. His age was shown as 85 in 1860, birth state: Virginia. Page 380 family 1528. In the 1870 census his age was 95 and birth state, Virginia, Rutherford Co., NC pg 40 B, family 177. So we conclude that he probably born in Virginia. His actual birthdate and date of death were taken from his tombstone, in the Oak Grove Church Cemetery at Ellenboro, North Carolina. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2014 156 Regarding Jeremiah’s parents, Rev. Christenberry Lee 1895 memoirs stated that Jeremiah’s father was “Archee Blanton, illegitmate son of Thomas (error: should read: son of Abraham) Womack and Ann ___ Blanton”. July 2002 DNA testing of certain Blanton offspring plus DNA testing of Jack Womack, descendant of Abraham, confirm Rev. Lee’s memoirs. Rev. Lee also stated that Jeremiah’s wife, Sarah Womack was the daughter of Thomas Womack, Archee’s brother. (this is wrong, she was Thomas’ grandaughter). Rev. Lee’s article also named children of Jeremiah & Sarah: Riley, Jesse, Josiah, Ransom, Jackson, Steven, Elijah, Tempa and Sarah Ann. Not much is known about Archee Blanton, and nothing is known about the mother of Jeremiah, not even her given name. Jeremiah had moved to North Carolina by 1793, when he founded the first Methodist Church at Ellenboro, in Rutherford Co., NC. Ellenboro is approximately 55 miles west of Charlotte, NC. Rutherford County lies on the south state line bordering South Carolina. Spartanburg, SC lies 35 miles to the south of Ellenboro, NC. Jeremiah purchased 100 acres on Grog Creek Dec. 6, 1797. In 1798 he married Sarah Womack, daughter of William and Lucienda Womack. Jeremiah and Sarah were first cousins, once removed. Jeremiah and family appear in the 1800 census of Rutherford Co., NC, pg. 100: one male under age 10(Roley/Riley); one male 16-26 (Jeremiah); one female 16-26 (Sarah). Brother Obediah appears on census pg. 99. In 1801, a and grant to Jeremiah Blanton was recorded in Book 15 pg 17 Grant #190. In 1810 Jeremiah bought two tracts of land, 1st from Trench Cox, Bk 25, pg. 272; 2nd tract from Abe Kintzing, Bk 25, pg 272 On Jan. 13, 1813, he bought land on the Middle fork of Sandy Run. In 1821, another land grant to Jeremiah was recorded in Bk 32, pg. 33, Grant # 581. On Oct. 17, 1828, he bought land on the waters of Second Broad River. His brothers Clayburn, Obediah and William also bought lands near Jeremiah. One deed alone has all four brothers signing. May 16, 1805, Bk 22-23, pg. 308, from Clayburn Blanton of Rutherford CO., NC, to William Blanton of same county, deed witnessed by Jeremiah and Obediah. This deed alone would signify close kinship. Jeremiah, Obediah, William and Jesse Blanton appeared in the 1810 census Rutherford Co., NC pg. 87. Clayburn was on pg. 88. In the 1820 census, Jerry Blanton appears on pg. 388. In 1830, Jeremiah and William appear on pg. 484 and Obediah on pg. 495. Jeremiah appeared in the 2nd Broad River District, Rutherford Co., NC during the 1850 census, shown as Jerry, which was probably his nickname. His birth state is shown as NC on the census, but that might have been the census taker’s doing, or Jeremiah in old age not remembering too well, that he was born in VA. His age was 75. His wife Sarah, age 64; daughter Sarah A., age 21. Wife Sarah died in 1858. In 1865, Jeremiah deeds land to son Elijah, Bk 48, Pg. 488. This is the last land transaction e found on Jeremiah. She is buried in Wesleyanna Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson Co., NC. Notes for James Lafayette Tatham, Catherine Boyd and Arminda Cabe: James L. Tatham, private, enlisted July 14, 1862 at Webster, Jackson Co., NC. Was captured in East Tennessee, and paroled December 10, 1862 at Carter Depot. Served in Co. H, 62nd NC Infantry with the Thomas Legion. “Family History” says: James L. Tatham was wounded in the Civil War in either Tennessee or South Carolina. His wife Catherine Boyd Tatham traveled thru the mountains (which were infested with deserters and other riff raff) on a white mule in order to bring him home. He was lying under a tree and thought he had died when he saw her on the mule. She took him home to Savannah Creek, NC to recuoperate (sic). He was later accused of deserting and two soldiers were sent after him. Word of their arrival naturally spread before them and James was hidden when they arrived. The soldiers were told he was out hunting and would return that afternoon. Plans were made for James and one of his brothers to bring him to them at Cowee Gap (top of Cowee Mountain) at dusk that night. The brothers (either 2 or 3 of them) left that night and all returned. Supposedly, when the first road was cut throught (sic) Cowee Gap two graves were found. It was rumored they belonged to the two soldiers.
