Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We would start this time with asking our membership to study p. 49 and pages 90 - 93. We have opportunities for your service if you are inclined to help. Our fundraiser might need "all hands and the cook," so please be willing in case you are needed. In our second quarterly issue, we need to thank the following members: Ruth Ensley Bryson, Tim j Barker, Mack Sutton, Rick Frizzell, Harry Bumgarner, Bill Crawford, Dorris Beck, Deanne Roles, Gary Phillips, Betty Foti, and of course Ruth Shuler. You will see the hand of all of these fine members in this particular issue, and like so many of these publications, it would be impossible to have it together if it were not for the willingness and efforts of these folks. Ruth Shuler always deserves a special hand, because having grown up in the same household, she recognizes the myriad shortcomings of your editor and comes to the rescue. Many thanks to all. We are fascinated this time with the Emanuel Shuler account, Tim Barker's pictures, and with the striking similarity of the Parris forebears to folks we know today. When you have exhausted your energies with all of that mowing, come inside, pour yourself a glass of iced tea that is as sweet as syrup, kick back and enjoy JTJ. It is, as always, your publication. Since it is still in the negotiating stages, we will need to give a rain check on t h e details, b u t this is a v e r y large matter. Cousin Cecil D. Crawford is not a J C G S member, but he has a n intense interest in the history of t h e Crawford family, particularly from t h e military standpoint. He has recently learned t h a t the Goldsboro - Wayne County a r e a c h a p t e r of the SCV had placed markers commemorating the soldiers who died in t h a t area. Those Confederates included M a r t i n V. Crawford from Jackson County. This was really good news. Although the soldiers were buried in a mass grave, t h e m a r k e r s , as we understand, a r e located in Willow Cemetery. The Society is planning a multifaceted fundraiser for later in t h e year. Still in the early planning' stages, we hope to offer a sale day where crafts, antiques, food, plants, and of course books will be on sale. If you live outside J a c k s o n County, stay in touch with us for t h e details. 49 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m \ j \ J Above, t h e older daughters of Birton Rickman Henson and Addie Calhoun Henson. We remember a time when one of the great joys in life was to stop at the roadside store for a cold d r i n k and a candy bar. Each cost a nickel - as they should - and everyone was happy about it. On the mountain behind where he lived was a cave known as the "Plez Green Hole." As the story goes, d u r i n g the Civil War, Plez Green stayed in it to watch for any signs of federal raiders coming through, so t h at an a l a rm could be sounded. He stayed there for most of t h e w a r . Above the cave, t h e t o p of t h e mountain gives a very good view of t h e hills a n d valleys surrounding it. One can look all t h e way u p t h e Savannah valley from here. F r om t h e outside, it doesn't look like much, but if you crawl into the opening on y o u r belly, it supposedly opens u p into a l a r g e room where you can stand up and move about with ease. Rumors in the community told of old lead musket rounds being found there in the 1960's. I have never been able to confirm that. Plez Green - and this is just speculation - may have been Pleasant Green who m a r r i e d Isabell Cabe, daughter of Amos and Esther Cabe. Isabell's sisters were Hannah, who married Warren Barker; a n d Catherine, who m a r r i e d J a s o n B a r k e r . Ella Mae Brooks, a cousin, told me that while she attended school at the old Viewpoint School, the history subject being taught was t h e Civil W a r , and the teacher took all t h e students on a field t r ip to this cave. One of her classmates got stuck in the opening, and the class had a hard time freeing her. This would have been in the 1930's.when the cave was probably well - known to many people who knew it a n d t h e s t o ry behind it. ^J 52 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m 2 *« Above, Charity Barker Green, daughter of Jason and C a t h e r i n e Cabe Barker. Genealogy just gets better all the time. A telephone call led one Jerry P. Hendricks of Fort Smith, Arkansas to Ruth and Roy Shuler. Hendricks is a descendant of Emanuel Shuler, one of the sons of George Shuler, the original Shuler settler in this area. He followed his telephone call with several family group sheets which he has generously given us permission to use in Journeys Through Jackson. Since Jerry Hendricks plans to publish his Shuler material, we will quote his work in italics.] Emanuel was born October 20, 1793 in the Pendleton District of South Carolina where his Swiss ancestors had first settled. In 1801, when he was 8 years old, he moved with his family north about forty miles to near the Great Smoky Mountains in Buncombe County, North Carolina. When they purchased this land, they were in Buncombe County, but because of changing county borders and new counties being formed, the location of their new homeplace was changed to Haywood Co and later to Jackson Co. One of his father's tracts of land ended up in Swain Co, NC His father also owned land in Macon Co, NC. Actually when Emanuel's parents moved to North Carolina, they never moved again - the state just kept redisricting their home into new or other counties. Emanuel and Jane Ingram were married about 1819 and their first two children were born in Haywood County, North Carolina. Emanuel and Jane and one son and one daughter were recorded In the 1820 Census of Haywood County, and his parents and his brother David and his family were also recorded living in the same county. In 1824, Emanuel bought some Cherokee Indian lands in the western portion of Macon County, NC, which several years later was redistricted into Cherokee County. On December 30, 1846, Emanuel filed to the Cherokee Claims - Fourth Board a claim for $762.00. A decree rejecting this claim was recorded on February 16, 1847. At the time, Emanuel was living on former Cherokee Indian lands in Cherokee County, NC. Since there has been no record of any Indian blood being in the Shuler or related families, it is to be assumed that this was a claim which listed "Subsisting Indioans - Decree rejecting claim under lSf* article." In 1848, Emanuel sold the farm in Cherokee County and the family moved about 100 miles southwest to Cass(now named Bartow) County in northwestern Georgia, where their last child was born. Emanuel's land and home in Bartow County is today found east of AdairsviUe, Georgia, being north of Hwy. 140 with the east border of his property running to Sinard Road This land consisted of 160 acres and is Lot #41 in the 6* District of Bartow County. Emanuel, Jane, and their family were enumerated in the 1850 Census of Cass County, Georgia, and recorded living at home with them were their children Lavina (30), John (28), William (26), George (21), Eliza (22), Margaret (16), James (14), Goldman (12) and Richard (1). Emanuel was always reasonably prosperous, and throughout the middle part of his life was a slave holder. As the years went by, his children married and started families in Georgia. His sons fought for the Confederacy but returned home to face the total devastation of their homeland.and with little hope after the war, most of Emanuel and Jane's children.had settled in northwest Arkansas. In 1875, Emanuel and Jane sold his land near AdairsviUe, Georgia.and settled near their children in Cole Township of Sebastian County, Arkansas. 67 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2004 Emanuel and Jane are buried beside each other in the Shuler family plot at Mountain View Cemetery north ofHackett \J The Family of Emanuel and Jane Ingram Shuler Emanuel Shuler (20 Oct 1793 - 11 Mar 1883) m.
