It was our trip outside a moment ago that set us to reminiscing. So strangely familiar, the chill night air, the dogs waiting eagerly in their straw-littered pens to be fed. There was something familiar in the way we tossed an extra arinful of straw in Star's pen. The golden-haired co llie is clue t() whelp her fifth litter o~ puppies any day now. We walked through the yard and back to the house, hardly nptidng the little gray kitten who is always scrambling underfoot. \ <\Te recall some fi e years ago that we wrote a piece abou t a fall ni ght such as this. About going outside in the chill October air, pulling up the collar of our jacket and b lowing our breath at a cold Halloween moon. And how we went down to the barn to make sure that the haU-grown pup Star, was warm in her b ed of straw. nd, as we h ead d ba k t the warmth of the d n , our young mal co) li Lan e shoved hi cold nlllzzl against our hand, an 1 we tooped to run our fingers through his gr at oat. Like many another breed, collies run the wh( 1 gamut of ph ys.i.cal and mental quirks from the ·ubbme to the ric:liculou . Some are silly and empty-headed. Oth rs are timid to th e point of cri.ng) ng. StilJ other live only to bark noisily and t:ear viciously at the feed pan. So manv others are colorless, long-haired creature , who a ·k nothing of life and give nothing, known to bree '"'rs as "cl e ad w ood, . " Yet those who have b een privileged to own the highest type of collie know that he i one of the £j nest ani· mals in all of God's kingdom. If there i uch a thin as a soul in a dog, surely it can be found in the dee - et eyes. of such a collie, with his mi ty and dreamy look. Eyes that can reflect devotion, sadne , mi chievous curiosity, and an invitation to romp, in accordance with his · master 's mood. And who is blessed with more doggy .wisdom and understanding than a truetype, four-year-old collie? Lance was su·ch a dog. And we might add, so i Star, our prized female. But a man's heart is in a rugged male companion, for whom no weather i too ·wild, and for whom no walk is too long. For after all a man is but a boy, grown up over night, and " ·hat is a boy without hi clog?
