Description
Summary:Noted Arctic Explorer Dies. Noted Arctic Explorer Dies. Gen. A. W. Creely Led Disastrous "Farthest North" Expedition in 1881. Washington, Oct. 20. — General Adolphus W. Greely, 91-year- old arctic explorer, died today at a hospital here. He became seriously ill on October 7 and was removed to a hospital, where a heart ailment and artery trouble brought his death. Greely led the "farthest north" expedition of 1881. Prom that expedition of 25 men seven returned, found by the third of a series of relief expeditions after being marooned four years in the arctic near latitude 83 degrees, 24 minutes—the then "farthest north." Their polar ship had been crushed in the ice. It was not until March 27 of this year that congress took formal recognition of Greely's 19th century achievement, when it voted him the congressional medal of honor. As an officer of the signal corps, Greely was in charge of building the first telegraph line to the Pacific coast in 1867. A major general in charge of the Pacific coast division of the army in 1906, Greely directed relief work at the San Francisco earthemake and fire.
