(UP)—Alaska's runaway Black Rapids glacier dumfounded observers today with a startling change of The gigantic ice mass, varying its speed from day to day, stirred speculation as to whether it would finally dam the Big Delta river, cut off the Richardson highway and wipe out the nearby Black Rapids roadhouse. After a thunder storm and heavy rain, the glacier shoved forward 250 feet in 24 hours. The next day it slowed to a foot an hour.
