Summary:Glacier Advance Sets Speed Mark: Black Rapids Ice Pack Now Over Five-Mile Route. GLACKER ADVANCE SETS SPEED MARK Black Rapids Ice Pack Now Over Five-Mile Route FAIRBANKS, Alaska, Feb. 22 (AP)—Black Rapids glacier's reported five-mile advance in the past four months is a world speed record for glacial movement, said Ernest N. Patty, geologist, here Patty, ex-dean of the University of Alaska school of mines and ex-professor at Washington State college, told interviewers the Black Rapids glacier's reported movement figures out at about 220 feet The Muir glacier, on the coast, holds the Alaska record for speed, he said, with a scientifically measured movement of seven feet a day. However, he said, some glaciers in Greenland have been clocked at 75 feet a day. Scientists who have studied the Black Rapids glacier, about 130 miles south of here, said they believe that spring will halt the advance, melting the ice faster than the gigantic pressure from snow and icefields high in the mountains can press the face of the ice wall forward.
