Description
Summary:All Other Countries Tame Beside Alaska: Covering Territory Educational Purposes National Exhibit. ALL OTHER COUNTRIES TAME BESISDE ALASKA COVERING TERRITORY EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES NATIONAL EXHIBIT Antonio Mattei, 'head artist in charge of the 12 now putting Alaska on canvas for posterity to enjoy, left Seward yesterday for Inerior points. The 12 artists are 12 of America's most talented young men. More than 30 local sketches were made and of these it is almost a certainty a few will be transfered to permanent canvases for national exhibit. About 40 canvases of Alaska is the goal. Even though skies dripped, excellent local sketches were made. Coming Back "I have traveled and painted all over the world," said Mr. Mattei, who hails from New York, "but ail is tame alongside Alaska. I am coming back for a long stay. Rockwell Kent, whom Seward people know well, told.,me all about your beautiful, .rugged country, so we were not unprepared." Since leaving. New; York th: latter part of May, the artists have traveled more than 8,000 miles and sketched hundreds of pictures. It was admitted that they are tired, but cannot let up because their job in the Northland ends next month and they still have an immense territory to visit, including the Yukon. The group is working under direction of Department of Interior, Washington, D. C.
