Description
Summary:Spokane To Alaska. Spokane to Alaska. A Seattle daily notes that "plans for building a railroad from Spokane through British Columbia and the Yukon, into Alaska, have just been uncovered by some one pleasantly prowling among old provincial archives in Victoria. The find reveals the forgotten fact that in 1886 the United States appropriated $100,000 for exploration of the project." Even then, nearly 50 years ago, it was seen that if ever a railroad is built to Alaska, an interior route will be necessary. The engineering difficulties would be minor in contrast with those of a coast line road. An interior air route, too, will be found safer, shorter and better in every way than a route through the fog banks of the coastal region.
