Description
Summary:Juneau Food Curtailed By Liner Mishap. Juneau Food Curtailed By Liner Mishap JUNEAU, Alaska, Saturday, May 16.—(U.P.)—Damage to the steamship North Sea, which hit a rock in Alaskan waters early Thursday, caused a shortage of fresh food in Juneau today through failure of arrival of considerable freight consigned to Juneau merchants. Public Works Administration projects were shut down temporarily awaiting arrival of materials and supplies on the crippled ship. A hole was opened in the bow of the North Sea and it was necessary for 143 passengers an d forty members of the crew to take to life boats. They were picked up Thursday afternoon by the Coast Guard patrol boat Alert from Ketchikan, Which later transferred them back to the North Sea. Passengers for Alaska ports north of Ketchikan were taken aboard the steamship Victoria, while the North Sea remained at Ketchikan. She will return shortly to Seattle to be drydocked for repairs.
