Description
Summary:Food Shortage Felt In Alaska. FOOD SHORTAGE FELT IN ALASKA SEATTLE, Wash., Aug. 25.—Unusually late and severe storms about Bering strait and in the Kotzebue sound district have caused much suffering to teachers in government schools, owing to the depleted food supplies and in the inability of vessels to reach them, according to advices today from Cape Prince of Wales to W. T. Lopp, chief of the Alaska division, United States bureau of education. Fred R. Tait and Mrs. Tait of Seattle, teachers at Wales, on the isolated cape of that name, wrote Mr. Lopp that here had been no boat to Wales since July 6, when a series of storms began. They lived for several weeks on beans and dried pea soup with some native food furnished by Eskimos.
