JUNEAU, Alaska, Monday, July 13.—(JP)—His heavily laden river boat hurled on rocks and wrecked in rapids on Twin Glacier River, Father Bernard Hubbard, veteran Alaska explorer, narrowly escaped death, he reported here today. The accident happened last week. Ken Chisholm, his companion, swam through the rapids to shore after receiving his priest's blessing, but before he returned with help, an expedition headed by Mary Joyce, famed girl dog musher, arrived. Father Hubbard was taken off, leaping into the motorboat as it swirled by. Much equipment was lost in the wrecked boat. "Our heavily loaded boat, hitting on a rock, was hurled against the rocks and turned over," Father Hubbard said. "By almost a miracle, Chisholm and I leaped for the rocks and stuck on. "Ice floes from the lake were swirling down the river and as we were in an isolated spot, we saw no chance of help." The accident was his first serious mishap in ten consecutive years' of Alaska exploration. Father Hubbard said. The boat lost was a specially built steel craft. He said he had ordered one to replace it but will return immediately to the district with a specially built boat made here.
