(IP)—Father Bernard Hubbard, the "glacier priest," was back here safe today after the second successful ascent of Shishaldin volcano, during which the expedition ended "almost fatally," in his own words. Already the conqueror of the dangerous Unimak island peak while it was in eruption last year, Father Hubbard reported that this season his party struggled six weeks before the! summit was reached, on July 3. One of the members, Professor Roderick Chisholm, is now aboard the steamer Dellwood, returning to San Francisco. Gale Picks Up Men, "While struggling along the perilous glacier on the cone," Father Hubbard said, "a sudden gale registering at least 80 miles an hour swept our party off its feet and blew the men helpless along the swirling snows. "In the lea of an ice pinnacle, we managed to get a fly tent over our heads. There, four men and three pack dogs crouched, freezing for hours, until a slight lessening of the gale allowed us to get to the bottom of the mountain." Nearly Lost. Almost unprecedented bad weather made this season's attempt to reach the summit long and dangerous, he said. On the first two attempts, the party got within 3000 feet of the summit, before being forced back. On the second attempt, the expedition was nearly lost. When the summit was finally reached, a week ago, he said, the mountain again "blew a blizzard" at the climbers, and all had to enter the gassy, steaming cone at the top to thaw out their clothes and freezing fingers before starting back downward.
