Summary:Dares Fiery Crater To Get Pictures. Dares Fiery Crater To Get Pictures. CHIGNIK, Alaska, July 11. (/P)—After one successful trip into the crater of Aniakchak crater, the world's largest active volcano, Father Bernard Hubbard, the "glacier priest," today was preparing for another dip into the ash strewn, gas filled boiling pit. Father Hubbard said the crater was entirely devoid of animal or plant life, due to ashes, cinders and volcanic bombs. The present explosive area of the 30-square-mile pit is about four miles wide, he said, consisting of the main upbuilt hub, three miles in circumference, several huge explosive pits and pushed up hills, which emit lava and gases. The crater is still erupting, he said, and pushing up new lava plugs. Gases Cause Pain. The priest, who with three companions made the trip, said the gases were nauseating and the entire party suffered from headaches, but encountered no real difficulties. The party had thousands of feet of moving picture film taken of the active area. The next hike into the crater will be made for still pictures, Father Hubbard said. After that he expects to fly over the pit for air pictures, later returning to Seward.
