Description
Summary:Amudsen Pole Trip Costly: Explorer Will Tell Here Of Flight Which Cost $750,000. AMUNDSEN POLE TRIP COSTLY Explorer Will Tell Here of Flight Which Cost $ 750,000. The Norge expedition, about which Captain Roald Amundsen will lecture at the American theater Sunday afternoon and evening, cost, in round figures, $750,000. The mony was spent in outfitting and conducting the cruise that took the Amundsen-Ellsworth expedition from Rome to Teller, 71 miles from Nome, Alaska. This adventure was the climax to Captain Amundsen's 22 years as an explorere of the polar regions. In 1905 he made the first voyage on record through the Northwest passage; in 1911 he planted the Norwegian flag at the south pole; in 1925 he made an attempted airplane dash for the north pole, but was forced to land within 200 miles of the pole. It was by reason of this previous experience that Captain Amundsen, Lieutenant Lincoln Ellsworth, his American associate, and Riisar-Larsen, his navigator, knew something of the dangers ahead of them when they took to the air or Kings bya, Spitzbergen, on the morning of May 11, 1926. At Teller, Alaska, 71 hours later, they made a safe landing of the giant airship and its crew, a feat which aeronautical experts previously believed impossible. A moving picture cameraman aboard the Norge recorded the entire trip, including the planting of American, Norwegian and Italian flags on the pole, and landing safely in a storm at Teller. These pictures are used to illustrate Captain Amundsen's lecture.
