Description
Summary:Nome, Just Before Fire Destroyed City. Nome, Just Before Fire Destroyed City Flames starting from sparks on the roof of the Golden Gate hotel were spread by a strong wind until virtually all of the business section and many dwellings in Nome, historic gold rush metropolis of the north, were smoking ruins. Hundreds were rendered homeless by the fire, which was the third major catastrophe to ravage the city since its heyday after the gold strike of 1900 on Nome beach. Twice before fire destroyed a large section of Nome, though not as much as the latest conflagration. A tidal wave wrought 'terrific destruction 19 years ago. The photograph shows the business section of Nome before the fire.
