Summary:Canoes Cross Arctic Sea: 75 Siberian Eskimos Paddle Over To Visit Alaska. CANOES CROSS ARCTIC SEA 75 Siberian Eskimos Paddle Over to Visit Alaska. NOME, Alaska, June 6. OP)— Speaking of transpacific hops—a fleet of 10 canoes was beached on the shores of St. Lawrence island, Alaska, and their crews of 75 Siberian Eskimos were feasting and day after having paddled across the North Pacific ocean from Asia. There is but 50 miles of open sea, at this point, St. Lawrence island being a part of North America, although some 40 miles offshore. The voyage is an annual affair with the Siberians, although last y.ear was the first time for a number of years that the soviet permitted them to visit America. Foot races, wrestling matches and dancing, together with the swapping of stories, comprise the dizzy round of entertainment. The voyage is made with sails and paddles, the Siberians being too hard up financially to afford motors such as are affected by their American cousins.
