Description
Summary:Fear Woman Adrift On Ice: Eskimo Missing Since Bering Floe Went Out. FEAR WOMAN ADRIFT ON ICE Eskimo Missing Since Bering Floe Went Out. NOME, Alaska, March 15. (/P) -- Natives were alarmed today over the disappearance of an Eskimo woman known as "Tootsie," who has been missing since the Bering sea ice went out yesterday, and carried with it many persons, who were rescued by the coast guard. "Tootsie" is well known through her association with Arctic expeditions of Roald Amundsen and Vilhaljmur Stefansson. She was an ardent crab fisher and would wait until the rest' of the Eskimos went to church on Sunday to steal their fish and crabs which they had caught through the ice. The ice moved off shore a considerable distance and broke up, making rescue attempts difficult and dangerous.
