GRIEST CONTROLS TYPHOID OUTBREAK Surgeon At Barrow, Alaska, Has Many Troubles Just Before Long Winter Weather Sets In Barrow, Alaska, Oct. 2.—UP)—Dr. Henry W. Griest, surgeon at Presbyterian mission hospital, said today he believed a typhoid outbreak in this Arctic settlement was under control. Three native children and a native nurse were stricken by the disease. Helen, the native nurse, two of the children were recovering satisfactory, Dr. Griest said, but one child continued critically ill. Dr. Griest left here on a hunting trip three weeks ago. He developed pneumonia the same night and returned the next day to find the typhoid appearing; his wife, who supervises nurses, suffering from an a"on the spine, and the well-trained Eskimo cook vanished on a honeymoon. Made Him Quit. Dr. Griest carried on for five days, going to the hospital to look after his patients. Finally Mrs. Griest, somewhat recovered, forced him to to to bed. While he was recuperating this week, he received word from the Presbyterian board of national missions in New York demanding retrenchment, limiting of help and positive economy. "When it rains, it pours," Dr. Griest commented.
