Description
Summary:New Diphtheria Cases Reported In Stricken Nome. New Dipntheria Cases Reported in Stricken Nome NOME, Alaska, Jan. 31.—(Associated Press)—Relief from the diphtheria epidemic is anticipated with the expected arrival here this afternoon of a dog team with anti-toxin. Five persons have died and 22 cases have been reported, 30 persons are suspected of having the disease, and 50 others have come in contact with diphtheria patients, it is announced today. WASHINGTON, Jan. 31.—(Associated Press)—Naval officials today declared that the Navy department had no practicable way of expediting shipments of anti-diphtheria serum for Nome by employment of naval vessels or aircraft. Ice conditions along the Alaskan coast would not permit the approach close enough to Nome to permit an air flight.
