(/P)— Along 26 miles of slushy snow trail, Albert Johnson, White Mountain Eskimo, drove his dog team home first today to win the Cape Nome derby before 1000 persons gathered at the finish line. Johnson's time, for the three 26-mile laps, run in three days, was 6 hours 8 minutes 31 seconds. He won $300 cash. Second place went to Edwin Punguk, White Mountain Eskimo, who covered the total 78 miles in 6 hours 26 minutes 50 seconds; third to Fred Topkok, Eskimo of Igloo, in 6 hours 35 minutes 34 seconds; fourth, Ernie Buckmaster, white, Nome, in 6 hours 44 minutes 14 seconds. Eskimos were jubilant that their men won the three leading places and most of the stake money. The fastest time in today's lap was made by Johnson, who covered it in 2 hours 7 minutes 54 seconds. His best time, made the first day on better snow, was 1 hour 56 minutes, an average speed of approximately 13 miles an hour.
