Summary:Bob Buzby Wins Alaskan Derby: Third Straight Victory In Northern Classic -- Makes 80-Miles Mush In Fast Time. BOB BUZBY WINS ALASKAN DERBY Third Straight Victory in Northern Classic—Makes 80-Mile Mush in Fast Time. FAIRBANKS, Alaska, March 10. G43)—Repeating his triumphs of both the last two years to the acclaim of visitors from all Alaska, Bob Buzby, young Fairbanks business man, mushed home today to win the 80-mile dog derby, the "high spot" of Fairbanks' big ice carnival. His team's time was 8 hours 7 minutes 20 seconds. Huskies driven by Julian Hurley, United States district attorney here, won second place. Hurley was also a derby winner, coming home in front of the rest of the pack in the 1932 event. To a Nome sledman, Doc Blaafladt, who mushed his 18-dog team here 500 miles from Nome to enter the big race, went third place. Ernie Buckmaster, who brought his 11 black Siberian huskies here in a transport plane, failed to place in the money. Despite the mild winter weather, enough snow lay on the ground to make racing conditions good. To the winner, Buzby, will go the United States signal corps trophy for permanent possession for his third victory. A money prize also goes to him and to the second and third place racers.
