Description
Summary:"The Alaskan." "The Alaskan." Twelve genuine Alaska sledge dogs and their owner, "Sport" M. V. L. Smith, are declared to be touring about the country with John Gort's big comic opera production, "The Alaskan," which comes to the Spokane for a week's engagement October 27. "Mr. Cort contracted with the owner to bring his entire outfit to the States and furnish real northwestern atmosphere for the new comic opera," asserts the press agent. "These interesting canine 'huskies' have been for the past four years serving as mail carriers between Unalakleet and Nome under the guidance of 'Sport' Smith, who is one of the best known mail carriers of the northern gold country. It took Smith and his dogs five weeks to reach New York City for the opening of the 'Alaskan' at the Knickerbocker theater and he brought them from Seattle in a box car walled with ice, in which they are now carried by the show company. This car, as it is arranged, is practically a refrigerator car for live animals. " 'Skinny' and 'Bob,' two of the pack, saved their owner and companions from death in the icy water of Behring sea on April 9, 1904, when the pack sleds went through the soft ice of an early spring. 'Skinny' and 'Bob' were pacing the outfit. Engulfed, they forged forward until they got a footing on solid ice, after which the rest of the pack and their driver got out of the water."
