Description
Summary:Land Reported 400 Miles North Of Point Barrow. Land Reported 400 Miles North Of Point Barrow BARROW, Alaska, Sept. 29 (/P)— Discovery of land about 400 miles north and east of here in the Arctic Ocean was reported yesterday by Soviet Pilot Alexsei Gratciansky on his return from a third northern flight in search of the missing Russian transpolar fliers. Mr. Gratciansky said he saw a long, low sandspit which might have been an island about the seventy-sixth parallel along the 153d meridian. He said he believed shallow water surrounds the spit and that it might make a good air base for polar flights, should the island prove large enough. He reported finding no trace of the airmen, missing since mid-August on an attempted Moscow-Fairbanks flight.
