Craig, Alaska, Dec. 31—OP)—Harold Roberts, 14, and David Peratovich narrowly escaped death today in a vain effort to save Harold's mother, Mrs. George Roberts, from drowning. They were en route home from Klawak, also on Prince of Wales island, when Mrs. Roberts fell off their power boat. Harold and David dumped a skiff overside and then leaped overboard to rescue Mrs. Roberts. The skiff swamped but the boys clung to it. A third youth aboard the motorboat was compelled to remain at the wheel, unable to stop the engine. He finally swung the boat around and ran through the middle of the skiff, permitting the lads to grasp the sides of the motor-boat. Mrs. Roberts' body was recovered. 153rd Victim Killed Seattle^ Dec. .31—UP)—King county's 1935 fatality mark" reached 153 tonight with the death of Jack McDonald, 51, and Walter Nelson, both of Seattle, a few hours before the arrival of the New Year. An automobile driven by R. Dooley, Seattle, struck Nelson tonight and he died soon afterward. Nelson died the victim of an accident Christmas eve when an automobile driven by C. S. Grindall, Seattle, hit Nelson's parked car. Hit and Run Slaying Tacoma, Dec. 31 — UP) — Walter Fietz, 68, employee of the Northern Pacific railroad for 35 years was instantly killed here tonight by a hit- and-run driver. Fietz was hurled more than 50 feet and the machine which hit him sped away before witnesses were able to obtain its license number, police reported. Frank Leverenz, T3, suffered a possible skull fracture when struck by the car of Charles A.- Hunter, police said. Fietz's death was the 69th due to auto trafflce this year. In 1934 67 were killed in car accidents. Oregon Man Killed Salem, Ore., Dec. 31—UP)—Orlando H. Smith, 65, of Salem, former publisher of a newspaper at Woodland, Wash., was killed apparently instantly here early tonight at a residence intersection when he was struck by an automobile driven by Edward Roger Barrett, 27, of Salem. City police arrested Barrett on a charge of reckless driving. Carson who was a Spanish war veteran, is survived by his widow, Ellen L. Carson, and a son, Orlando, Jr. of Salem. He returned here a year ago after operating the newspaper at Woodland for four years.
