OP)—The mail boat Fairbanks was crushed by ice and sunk in Big Port Walters, Baranoff island, southeastern Alaska, yesterday, the United States coast guard headquarters here was informed today. The cutter Alert removed four passengers, the crew and 52 sacks of mail from the Fairbanks and will assist the salvage tug Akutan in an attempt to raise the sunken craft. Later the Alert will deliver the mail to its destination among the villages on the west coast of Prince of Wales island. The Fairbanks was the second small vessel to fail prey to Alaskan ice in recent days. The hull of the steamer Discoverer was worn through by contact with ice cakes and sunk off Ninilchik near Anchorage Thursday night. The crew took to a life boat and were saved.
