Description
Summary:400 Alaska Natives In Camps of CCC. 400 Alaska Natives In Camps of CCC JUNEAU, Alaska—There are now 400 natives enrolled in Alaska's CCC camps, employed in different localities between Kotzebu and Ketchikan. Their employment is based upon the Federal requirement of a quota from 325 to 600 man-years allowed for Alaska. It is specified that half of this number shall be natives. The object of the work is not only to give these native folk an opportunity to earn money but also enable them to improve their own living conditions and surroundings. Their work includes the rehabilitation of their cemeteries, installation of water and drainage systems in their villages, clearing school grounds, constructing overnight shelters for reindeer herders, and building corrals for their reindeer. Also, the natives are allowed to do the same work as the white CCC workers, This includes the making and clearing of trails and roads, and aiding in developing recreational places such as ski trails and playgrounds.
