Description
Summary:Plant To Run Through Year: Ketchikan Packers Plan To Operate Cannery On New Basis. PLANT TO RUN THROUGH YEAR Ketchikan Packers Plan to Operate Cannery on New Basis JUNEAU.—Frank Lloyd, manager of the Ketchikan Packing Company, who was a recent arrival here for the meeting of the Territorial Chamber of Commerce, discloses that his company is planning experiments toward the placing of its Ketchikan cannery on a year-around basis. "All now depends on the quick settlement of the Pacific Coast maritime strike," Lloyd declared. "Our company has always followed the practice of working a smaller crew, but working them all for as long a period as possible," he continued. "This spring, if shipping conditions allow us to get our necessary materials in time, we plan to experiment with different programs that will enable us to work all the year around, employing a steady, rather than a seasonal crew. We are an Alaskan company and have always made a point of employing Alaska labor as much as we can, and we feel that it will be a big forward step to be able to keep our cannery running all year around, and a great boon to Ketchikan." Lloyd expects to remain in Juneau for some time yet, and may stay here for the next meeting of the Territorial Chamber of Commerce on February 22.
