Description
Summary:Prospects For Alaska Bright, Says McGovern. Prospects For Alaska Bright, Says McGovern Conditions throughout Alaska this year continue to show improvement over last year, according to Foster L. McGovern, manager of Alaska Department of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, who returned early this week from a month's tour of the principal cities on the Coast and in the interior of Alaska. Mr. McGovern predicted that the pack of canned salmon will be a record one. being exceeded only by that of 1934 when 7,250,000 cases were put up. The Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet districts experienced the heaviest runs in history; and the Southeastern Alaska canneries were being rushed to take care of the salmon catch, which was slow in coming this year. Gold production has been stimulated very materially by the increased price of gold. Many properties which could not be developed profitably before are now in operation. Business men in all of the towns from Ketchikan to Fairbanks reported to Mr. McGovern that they were having a substantial increase in business this year. There is a considerable volume of building going on and much improving and repairing.
