(AP)— One year ago today, a brief message from Point Barrow, Alaska, arctic outpost, shocked the world. "Will Rogers and Wiley Post killed in airplane crash 15 miles from here," it read. Today finds real progress being made toward perpetuating the memory of Rogers, beloved throughout the world for his homely wit. Rupert Hughes, chairman of the California section of the national committee preparing a memorial to Rogers, said the national committee has received about $250,000 to use as a memorial for Rogers. Of that amount, $40,000 was raised in California, A new actor's hospital at Saranac, N. Y., costing $1,000,000 has been dedicated to Rogers. The polo field where Rogers used to gallop is now called Will Rogers field. A bronze plaque bearing his likeness marks the new $500,000 Will Rogers sound stage at the Twentieth Century-Fox studios in the Westwood hills. The widow, Mrs. Betty Rogers, still resides in the Santa Monica canyon ranch home. The youngest son, Jimmy, is in school. Will Jr. is a newspaper publisher. The daughter, Mary, is pursuing a stage career.
