Description
Summary:Mattern Hunt, U. S. Navy Task: Vessels In Alaskan Waters Ordered To Seek Flyer In Aleutian Islands. MATTERN HUNT, U.S. NAVY TASK Vessels in Alaskan Waters Ordered to Seek Flyer in Aleutian Islands. NOME. Alaska, June 18. <JP)—Ensign William A. Moffett Jr., son of the late Rear Admiral Moffett, was called to duty today as ships and planes began a search over a wide area for Jimmie Mattern, down somewhere on his transpacific hop. The navy ordered all naval vessels and airplanes in Alaskan waters to aid the hunt for Mattern, missing four days. Three coast guard cutters were also ready to aid the search, wireless reports here said, in the belief that Mattern, who took off from Khabarovsk, Siberia, on Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. (eastern standard time), might have come down safely on some one of the islands of the Aleutians, stretching half way across the Pacific. Eight to 10 planes which have maintained their regular flying schedules over interior and southern Alaska the last few days, together with private flyers, will continue to keep a sharp lookout. Yesterday and today, spring-like weather was general throughout southern and central Alaska. The belief was expressed here that similar spring weather should be found in the same latitudes in Siberia, had Mattern turned that way on his long flight.
