(AP) — Rengo (Japanese) News agency reported today that Japanese police sieved a 4000-ton Russian steamer and a 100-ton Russian fishing boat off Makkanro, an uninhabited island among the northern Kuriles. This development came at a time when the slaying of three Japanese fishermen, allegedly by Russian police, on Kamchatka peninsula, had been scarcely settled. The police were sent out to investigate reports that Russians were spying in the Kuriles, a group belonging to Japan, Rengo said. More than 30 Russians were arrested. The Japanese were quoted by Rengo as saying the actions of the Russians were very suspicious and tantamount to invading Japanese territorial waters.
