SEATTLE, Jan. 7. -(Ap)- Sub-zero temperatures, snow, spring-like rains and a mild outbreak of scarlet fever in a remote area of Alaska, dotted the weather map today from the far north to California. Airplane pilots flew into Fairbanks, Alaska, with reports from the great fur center of Fort Yukon, 150 miles north of the arctic circle, that both federal and territorial schools had been closed since before New Year's because of scarlet fever. The pilots said all New Year festivities had been cancelled, including the innual Potlatch celebration, after four cases of scarlet fever broke out after Christmas. An undetermined number of other cases was also reported. Shortage of Fur. A shortage of fox and lynx because of cold and lack of food was reported oy trappers. 1 In southeastern Alaska, spring-like rains fell, sending the temperature to is high as 45 above. The lowest temperature, at Fairbanks, was only 16 above, compared with a low in the United States of 49 at Meacham, Ore. Temperatures in Washington state ranged from 40 above to a low of 32 degrees below zero at Chewelah, in the northeastern part of the state. Elk City, Idaho, reported 38 below. It was zero at Lewiston, Idaho, and at Walla Walla. . In scattered parts of Oregon, the mercury dropped far below zero. Besides the low of 49, Enterprise, Wallowa county, Ore., had 32 below. Cold weather aided engineers working on the government dam projects of Bonneville and Grand Coulee on the Columbia river. The earth froze as well as- parts of the river. At Pasco, Wash., and at The Dalles, Ore., the Columbia channel was closed by floating ice. The mercury stood at 10 below tonight in Pasco. Boise Records Go. Boise, Jan. 7 —AP)—Winter came to Idaho during the night in a record- breaking way. Frigidity marks for seven years were shattered in Boise when the temperature declined to 14 degrees below zero. The previous low was 17 below Jan. 23, 1930. And federal weathermen reported the cold spell was general over the Farmers rejoiced over prospects for an adequate supply of water to mature their 1937 crops. Idaho highway bureau engineers reported roads closed from Idaho Falls to the Montana line, but were finally opened and that Galena summit, one of the high points on the Sawtooth National trail through south Idaho, is impassable. In North Idaho. Sandpornt, Jan. 7.—UP)—North Idaho temperatures dropped to a record low for the winter before dawn today, but absence of snow-drifting wind allowed reopening of schools here after a two-day closing. The temperature here dropped to 18 below zero, but it was far from the panhandle minimum. Moravia, in Boundary county near the Canadian border, reported last night a low of 32 below zero. More than 25 cars remained stalled In this area, and county authorities said they would not have outlying roads plowed out for several days. Main highways were open throughout north Idaho. Schools here were closed in Tues-day's blizzard because they could not be heated properly in the high wind at near zero temperatures. From Coeur d'Alene came a report that District Highways Engineeer Richard Pearson, who advised motorists to stay off the roads, was stalled in a drift more than an hour on Rathdrum prairie.
