Description
Summary:Indian Rows Miles To Tell Tragedy. INDIAN ROWS MILES TO TELL TRAGEDY KETCHIKAN, Alaska, Dec. 27. (/P) —The arrival of the U. S. coastguard cutter Cyane here today brought to light the details of a Christmas eve tragedy in which Viola Monroe, 40, native of Astoria, Ore., perished, and William McHale, 50, formerly of Everett, Wash., nearly lost his life. The woman died on a beach from exposure. She and her companion swam to an island after McHale's gas boat struck a submerged object and sank Tuesday night in Behm canal near here. The cutter went to the scene of the tragedy after Bill Johnson, aged Indian, rowed 17 miles to Saxman, a village two miles southeast of Ketchikan, to summon aid.
