Summary:Member Of Geodetic Crew Lost. Member Of Geodetic Crew Lost. Lieut. M. H. Reese, Florida, and Max McLees of Edmonds Perish When Dory Overturns in Howling Gale. Two members of the crew of the Coast and Geodetic ship Surveyor, one an Edmonds man, lost their lives when a dory capsized during heavy seas last Sunday off Wislow low Island in Bering Sea, Seattle offices of the survey were informed today. The men were Lieut. M. H. Reese, 32 years old, of Florida and Quartermaster Max McLees of Edmonds. All Hope Abandoned. A message to Seattle Monday from Comdr. A. M. Sobieralski, commander of the Surveyor, said the two men were missing and a second message today said that all hope of their survival or recovery of their bodies had been abandoned. The commander said both the Surveyor and the Coast Guard had searched the area, but that the wind and seas of Sunday were so terrific that the men could not have weathered them. Caught in Wind. Some of the men from the Surveyor have been camped on Wislow Island and Reese and McLees were rowing from the ship to the camp when caught in the strong offshore winds. McLees is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. G. McLees of Edmonds. His wife, Annette, also lives at Edmonds. The Surveyor was due to return to Seattle October 15 but may sail back earlier because of adverse weather conditions in Alaska waters.
