Description
Summary:Mastodon Bones Ages Old, Found In Seattle Pit. Mastodon Bones Ages Old, Found In Seattle Pit SEATTLE, Jan. 24.—(AP) Bones of a mastodon, estimated by the college of science at the University of Washington to be 35,000 years old, were unearthed at a gravel pit here yesterday during sluicing operations. The remains of a tusk about four feet long and a six-foot length of rib, including the joint with the spine, turned over to the department for identification and classification, are said by the scientists to belong to an animal of the Game family as the present day Asiatic elephant, which ranged over the Puget Sound region during the glacial period. The mastodon probably fell to his death while roaming over the ice sheet that covered the Pacific Northwest to a depth of 5000 feet, Professor Trevor Kincaid declared.
